On the Species Diversity of Freshwater Bivalve Molluscs in Ukraine and the Strategy of their Conservation. Korniushin A. V. - The problem of species diversity of the Ukrainian bivalve molluscs is discussed in the light of different approaches to their systematics and taxonomy. The suggested list includes 30 species which validity is supported by different methods. The status of protection is suggested for 10 threatened species: Euglesa lilljeborgi - as endangered, Pseudanodonta complanata, Batavusiana crassa, E. pulchella and E. pseudosphaerium - as vulnerable, Anodonta cygnea, Neopisidium moitessierianum, E. personata and E. hibernica - as rare. The status of Sphaerium solidum remains undetermined, while Sphaerium nucleus, S. ovale and E. globularis need further investigation. Polessje (woodland area in the North-West of Ukraine), characterized by the highest species diversity of freshwater molluscs is considered the most important region for their conservation.

Changes in Parasite Fauna of Certain Fish Species in the Southern Aral Sea under Anthropogenic Pressure. Kurbanova A. I., Urazbaev A. N., Yusupov O. Yu. - Recent data on parasite fauna of 8 indigenous food fish species occurring under degraded environmental conditions of the Southern Aral in comparison with the data obtained in 1960-1965. The fish parasite fauna impoverishment and its factors are demonstrated. The parasite species, which give constantly high infestation, and pathogenic forms becoming potential agents of fish diseases under the extreme environmental conditions of the area are considered.

Hypothesis of Lengthy Migrations of Shortraker Rockfish, Sebastes borealis (Scorpaenidae, Scorpaeniformes), in the North Pacific Ocean. Orlov A. M. - On the basis of analysis of size composition, captures of benthic juveniles, and comparison of data obtained with ocean currents pattern the hypothetical scheme of lengthy migrations of shortraker rockfish Sebastes borealis Barsukov, 1970 in the North Pacific Ocean is provided. Accordingly this scheme the main areas of reproduction of species considered are waters off the eastern Kamchatka, western Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and British Columbia, where highest abundance of large fishes and almost lack of juveniles occurred. The most larvae born in the eastern part of the area transferred by currents to Aleutian Islands, from western Bering Sea to its eastern part, from eastern Kamchatka to Kuril Islands. The settlement of shortraker rockfish is accompanied with length about 10 cm. The part of benthic juveniles may lingering on in the areas of continental slope within quasistationary eddies and form temporary local populations. Other and probably larger part of fishes reaching length over 30 cm starts move back to reproductive areas gradually and perform lengthy migrations.

Taxonomic Relationships of the Common Toads (Bufo bufo complex) and Some Theoretical and Practical Problems of Systematics. Communication 2. Pisanets E. M. - The data of external morphological character variability of the common toad from the West Caucasus and some regions of Ukraine and Russia as well as the data of hybridization analysis are discussed. The obtained results incline to a conclusion that the differences between the West Caucasian toads and the other populations were exaggerated and the recent change of its taxonomical status was questionable (Орлова, Туниев, 1989). Our results of the hybridization in laboratory conditions between the toads from the West Caucasus and other regions (fertile F1) also can be used as an evidence of no more than their subspecies level of differentiation. On the other hand, the low F2 viability could indicate the presence of two species in statu nascendi. It is important to point out that the final conclusion about the taxonomical status may depend on the 'species concept', the investigators refer to.

Development and Structure of the Long Bones of Skeleton in Reptilia. Domashevskay E. I., Zolotova-Haydamaka N. V. - Based on original researches, formation of bone tissue in long bones of extremites is considered. The development, structure and functional features are described for Reptilia, (lizards and turtles) which are different in bionomics, duration of growth of skeleton, and mass of skeletal parts. Major factors determining structural condition of a bone in different vertebrates, and also features of organization in various periods of individual life are established. The compact layer in the long bone of some Reptilia is formed due to formations of the lamelli-spongiose system as cells. The intramembranal ossification along with the enchondral ossification is recorded in Reptilia for the first time.

Peculiarities of Prenatal Development of Lungs in Plain-Nosed (Vespertilionidae) and Horseschoe (Rhinolophidae) Bats. Kovalyova I. M. - For the first time the prenatal development of lungs and their definitive structure were studied in representatives of plain-nosed bats (Vespertilionidae) and horseshoe bats (Rhinolophidae). The results of this investigation show that in the studied bats the laying of lungs being at the 14th stage of the embryogenesis, as well as their subsequent development right up to the 18th stage were of the same mode. However after the 18th stage the development of lungs in the studied plain-nosed bats was sharply different from that in horseshoe ones when forming the structure of these organs. The explanation of such a phenomenon is given in connection with distinctions in spatial reciprocal location of the thorax organs, the body, and the head during embryogenesis. The supposition about the probable mediated relation between the bats echolocation (namely methods of radiating signals) and the peculiarities of lungs structures was suggested.

Ticks of Kyiv - Urbozoological and Epyzootological Aspects. Akimov I. A., Nebogatkin I. V. - During 1985- 1999 years 12 species ixodiid ticks were collected with the flag trap from birds, agricultural and animals. Number of ixodid ticks is markedly increased in Kyiv for the last 8 years. From suburbs to center of the city, the number of species is clearly decreasing, while domination index of I. ricinus is increasing. D. reticulatus dominates in small urban parks. The character of distribution of tick ecological groups in A-E gradient is as follows: hole tick species dominate in suburbs, while in newly and thickly built urban areas these ticks disappear. In I. ricinus, D. reticulatus and Н. concinna ticks an antigene of the pseudotuberculosis agent is detected. Borreliae are found in 104 I. ricinus ticks from 661 ones belonging to 7 species.
