New and Little-Known Tephritidae (Diptera, Cyclorrhapha) from Europe. Korneyev V. A. — Two new species of the tribe Terelliini (Tephritinae) are described. Terellia (Cerajocera) cyanoides Korneyev sp.n. from northeastern Ukraine differs from other species of the subgenus by combination of banded wing, unmodified pedicel, black-spotted katepisternum and small size; its larvae bore stems of Jurinea sp. ex cyanoides aggr. on sand dunes in pine forests. Orellia tragopogonis Korneyev et Dirlbek sp. n. from Spain fits near O. scorzonerae (Robineau-Desvoidy), differing by fused apical and preapical wing crossbands, fore femur dorsally white setose and by larger size; its larvae feed in flower heads of Tragopogon dubium. 14 species of Tephritidae are recorded for the first time from certain European countries. Keys to species of Terellia subgenus Cerajocera and Orellia are provided.
Key words: Diptera, Tephritidae, Europe, new species, new records.

The change of the biological periods and phases in the annual life cycle of the beavers (Castor fiber) in the Krasnoyarsk region. Panov G. M. — The changes of the biological periods and phases occurred in the annual life cycle of the beavers (Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758) acclimatised in the Krasnoyarsk Region (Russia) are considered on the background of main climatic characteristics in the Don River basin (the place of origin of beavers-acclimatisants) and the area of acclimatisation. The study revealed partial or complete difference in the timing of the biological periods and phases between the two compared beaver populations as well as some consequences of these changes in the beavers from Central Siberia. Conclusions are made regarding the causes of several unsuccessful attempts of the beaver release in the Krasnoyarsk Region and some recommendations concerning their further acclimatisation in the northern part of the region.
Key words: beaver, acclimatisation, climate, biological periods and phases, Krasnoyarsk region.

Morphology of the Family Skrjabillanidae (Spirurida, Camallanina). Sokolov S. G. — Data on the morphology of the cephalic end, caudal end and ovejector of Skrjabillanus tincae Schigin et Schigina, 1958, S. scardinii Molnar, 1966, and Molnaria intestinalis (Dogiel et Bychowsky, 1934) are provided. New data on the structure of cloak in these species are presented, and the 2 groups teeth are recognized in skrjabillanid nematodes: the oesophageal teeth and onchia. The validity of the genus Agrachanus Tichomirova, 1971 is discussed and its synonymy with Skrjabillanus is accepted.
Key words: nematodes, morphology, Spirurida, Skrjabillanidae, Agrachanus, Skrjabillanus tincae, S. scardinii, Molnaria intestinalis.

Morphometric variation in wood mice, Sylvaemus (Muridae) from Ukraine fauna. Lashkova E. I. — Intra- and inter-specific variation in four Sylvaemus species of Ukraine fauna has been studied. 4 ex-ternal and 23 craniometric characters were measured for 1596 specimens. Diagnostic value of some characters as well as multiple trends in character sets variation have been analyzed. Principal compo-nents analysis shows that morphogenetic dependence between general skull size and sizes of auditory capsules, incisive apertures, several structures of rostrum, and some other characters, are of allometric nature and are essentially similar in four closely related species in Ukraine.
Key words: Sylvaemus, variation, principal components analysis, Ukraine territory.

Seasonal and Age Dynamics of Cestode Fauna of the Starling Sturnus vulgaris in Left-Bank Ukrainian Polissya. Greben O. B. — The results of studies on seasonal and age changes of cestode infestation in Sturnus vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758) during spring-autumn 1999 in Chernihiv Region are presented. Seven cestode species were found. Monopylidium musculosum (Fuhrmann, 1896) Fuhrmann, 1899 and Variolepis farciminosa (Goeze, 1782) Spassky et Spasskaja, 1954 were registered most often. Infestation was found to be maximal in April starlings. Then it decreased in nestling season and gradually increased before autumn migration. Nestlings from the primary eggs were free from cestodes. Infection occurred only in the secondary clutch nestlings directly before they left the nest. Infestation of young birds by cestodes is increasing gradually up to flying away for the winter.
Key words: Cestoda, Sturnus vulgaris, seasonal changes, age changes, Polesye, Ukraine.

First report of Steinernema bicornutum (Nematoda, Rhabditida, Steinernematidae) from the North Caucasus. Ivanova E. S., Spiridonov S. E. — Steinernema bicornutum Tallosi, Peters & Ehlers, 1995 was isolated by Galleria baiting from soil samples collected near Krasnodar (North Caucasus). The differences were found between the type (Yugoslavian) population and Krasnodar isolate in the average length of infective juveniles and spicules. All these differences (except spicule length in the second generation males) are not statistically significant. The RFLP analysis was able to distinguish nematodes from these two populations of S. bicornutum only in the Cfo I profiles (one restriction site in the type culture and two restriction sites in the Krasnodar isolate). The 715 bp long fragment of ribosomal gene (ITS1 + 5.8S + ITS2) of the Krasnodar isolate of S. bicornutum was sequenced and compared with similar sequence of the type strain. In accordance with RFLP data, one additional Cfo I restriction site was found in the Krasnodar S. bicornutum. Totally, the difference in 18 pairs of nucleotides per fragment of 715 bp was found between Krasnodar and type cultures, including 17 substitutions and one deletion (in type culture). Reported morphological and molecular differences are considered as inter-populational ones, and described nematodes from Krasnodar as another isolate of S. bicornutum.
Key words: entomopathogenic nematodes, Rhabditida, Steinernema, S. bicornutum, new isolate, morphology, rDNA.

On the Systematic Position of the Marine Fish Leech Heptacyclus albus (Hirudinea, Piscicolidae). Utevsky S. Yu. — The systematic position of the marine fish leech Heptacyclus albus Epstein et S. Utevsky, 1996 from the North Pacific is reconsidered. Such diagnostic features as small anterior sucker, weak pigmentation and transparent body, as well as peculiarities of its biology (attaching to the isthmus of the fishes of the genus Myoxocephalus), allow to transfer this species to the genus Oceanobdella and consider O. microstoma from the North Atlantic and adjacent regions of the Arctic as its closest relative. Oceanobdella alba comb. n. and O. microstoma may be considered an example of speciation by geographical isolation.

The Growth and Longevity of Chamelea gallina (Mollusca, Veneridae) in the Black Sea. Boltacheva N. A., Mazlumyan S. A. — Annual growth rings were found in the study of shell sections of Chamelea gallina (Linnaeus, 1758), from which the age and the longevity of Chamelea gallina were determined. Based on standard individuals, maximum age of molluscs was assessed as 9 years. Results obtained are compared with those known for Mediterranean population of the same species. It was also found that Chamelea gallina collected from different localities of the same area have comparable maximum shell length but considerably differ in the growth rate.

Peculiarieties of natural and synantropical acari of Wright Side and Central Forest-steppe of Ukraine. Kovalishina S. P. — On the territory of Central Woodland-Steppe of Ukraine, 37 species of Acariformes ticks belonging to 26 genera of 3 families were found. Shift to the protein enriched food was resulted in ontogenetic changes of Acariformes and gave rise to different ecological forms. The complexes of synanthropic Acaroidea imitate the formation of natural sites. The structure and the number of ticks depend on the conditions of environment and is a plastic and dynamic system.
Key words: ticks, acaricomplex, natural, synanthropic, Central (Cis-Dnieper) Woodland-Steppe of Ukraine.
