Critical review of the modern views on the phylogeny of Metazoa. Korniushin A. V. — The new methods and approaches introduced into the practice of phylogenetic research in the last years are considered. The most important results of such studies are summarized and the modern views on the metazoan phylogeny are briefly reviewed. The monophyletic origin of Metazoa, paraphyly of Radiata and monophyly of Bilateria are confirmed, the major clades of bilaterians (Lophotrochozoa, Ecdysozoa, Deuterostomia) are characterized, and relationships of phyla within these clades are observed. Some classic hypotheses about the origin of coelomic animals are observed in the light of the new data.
Key words: animal phylogeny, methodology, Metazoa, Radiata, Bilateria, coelomic animals.

New Taxa of the Genus Ñhorebus (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Alysiinae). Perepechayenko V. L. — Pentalexis, subgen. n. (type species C. (P.) mysteriosus, sp. n.) of the genus Ñhorebus Haliday is described. The new subgenus shows affinities with Phaenolexis Fo#rster, differing from the other subgenera by the combination of 5-toothed mandibles, eyes approximated in the ventral part of face and weakly pubescent eyes. Chorebus (Pentalexis) mysteriosus, sp. n. from Transbaikalia (Russia) and C. (Phaenolexis) scythicus, sp. n. from Ukraine are described. An abberant form of C. (Stiphrocera) sp. is described.
Key words: Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Alysiinae, Dacnusini, Ñhorebus, Palaearctics, taxonomy.

Effect of cattle grazing on habitats for the steppe marmot (Marmota bobak) in north-eastern Ukraine. Ronkin V. I., Savchenko G. A. — Qualitative and quantitative composition of vegetation cover, foraging and diet of the steppe marmot (Marmota bobak Mu#ll.) were studied in 1990–1997 at a stationary site in north-east of Kharkov region. The green food intake rate was chosen as a criterion for the foraging quality evaluation of different steppe marmot habitats. Cattle grazing leads to diminishing of the vegetation cover diversity and to disappearing of those patches where the green food intake rate by the steppe marmot is the least one. Accordingly the values of the food intake rate, the high proportion of dead plants together with species rejected or eaten in low quantities (for similar mass of forage plants) relative to total aboveground plant mass diminishes the accessibility to forage and worsens foraging conditions for marmots.
Key words: steppe marmot, grazing, food intake rate.

Morphological Variability of the Chigger Mite Leptotrombidium wolandi Kudryashova, 1979 (Acariformes, Trombiculidae) in Kyrgyzstan. Kharadov A. V. — The morphological variations were revealed for 355 (14.5%) Leptotrombidium wolandi Kudryashova, 1979 of examined larvae. Variability was shown for 12 structures, of them, 9 were with aberrations and 11 with anomalies. 59 types and 79 forms of the variability were detected. The more frequent aberrations were in the coxal, sternal and posterolateral chetae (37.6, 22.2 and 17.7%). The coxal (35.3%), sternal (20.6%) chetae aberration dominated in 12 and 14 forms respectively. The anomalies were more frequent in chetae of palpi and the largest diversity was found in idiosoma (5) and shape of scutum (5). Fîã scutum, the largest variability of forms is stated — 5 and 8, respectively. The correlation between aberrations of coxal and sternal chetae, and between posterolateral chetae and reduction of relevant angles of the dorsal scutum was found. Reduction of one of the coxal chetae, usually correlates with appearance of a cheta on the sternal region. A reduction of the lower angle of scutum usually correlated with lose of posterolateral chetae. Of the 15 complexes of morphological variability two (AM = 2 (28.4%) and Ñx + St (21.6%)) were dominated. The groups of morphological complexes C, D, E and F consisted 54.0, 1.4, 16.2 and 28.4%, respectively.
Key words: chigger mites, morphological variability, aberrations, anomalies, chetae.

The mites associated with honeybee Apis mellifera, inhabiting hive-logs in Polessky preserve. Piletskaya I. V., Zaloznaya L. M. — Honeybee families, living in hive-logs on the territory of Polessky Natural Reserve, were studied in spring 1999–2000. Acarofauna is represented by nine mite species from nine families, among which there are parasites (Varroa jacobsoni), saprophagous (Acaridae, Glycyphagidae) and predators (Aceosejidae, Parasitidae, Laelaptidae). Acarid mites are the most common group (several hundred exemplars in probe). The mites from the logs are divided into the permanent inhabitants and casual (Oribatidae). The acarofauna of logs is less diverse in contrast with populations of mites from the hives of apiaries. The invasion of the log-inhabiting honeybees by V. jacobsoni is considered from the viewpoint on their vital functions.
