Two new species of the Genus Calanopia
(Copepoda, Calanoida, Pontellidae) from the northern Levantine basin (Mediterranean
Sea). Uysal Z., Shmeleva A. — Two new species, Calanopia levantina Uysal
et Shmeleva, sp. n. and Calanopia metu Uysal et Shmeleva, sp. n. are described
and figured. These species were found in the zooplankton collected by the Nansen
net at 0–100 m depth along Turkish coastal waters in the northern Levantine Basin.
C. levantina is closely related to C. minor A. Scott and C. aurivillii Cleve but
differs from other species of this genus mainly by the structure and armature
of the fifth leg, the structure of rostrum, etc. C. metu differs from other species
of this genus by the robust form, body-wide-ovoid cephalosome with short thoracic
spines and a short compressed urosome.
Key words: Copepoda, Calanoida, Calanopia, Levantine basin, Mediterranean Sea.

other species by shorter eye stalks and pattern, venation and shape of the wing
in male and head coloration and wing venation in female. A key to species of the
genus Plagiocephalus Wiedemann is provided. The lectotype of Achias lobularis
Wiedemann is designated.

Invasion of Antarctic phocid seals by
acanthocephals. Stryukov A. A. — The preferences of acanthocephals genus
Corynosoma to different hosts, characteristics of their localization, age and
sex structure, indices of extensity and intensity of invasion were studied, the
rank of specificity of each host was determined. There is a lack of reference
data on these questions, so it is a promising direction of work.
Êey words: Acanthocephala, Corynosoma, Pinnipedia, Àntarctic.

Morphometric characteristic of oesophagus
and intestine in Black Scoter, Melanitta nigra (Anserifor-mes), wintering in the
Polish Baltic coast. Dzia/la-Szczepanczyk E. — The material for the studies
was oesophagi and intestines of 52 individuals of the Black Scoter Melanitta nigra
Linnaeus — 32 males (5 immature and 27 adult ones) and 20 females (11 immature
and 9 adult ones). The following morphometric features of the alimentary system
were analysed: oesophagus length EL and weight EW, duodenum length DL, combined
length of jejunum and ileum JIL, combined length CBL and weight CBW of both caeca,
small intestine length SIL, and combined length of rectum and cloaca RCL. In the
analysis the sex and age of birds was taken into consideration, as well as their
body sizes characterised by four parameters: body weight BW, body length BL, sternum
length SL, and tarsus length TL. Despite the revealed significant dimorphic differences
in the features describing the size of black scoters’ bodies, only in EL, EW and
RCL significant differences between males and females were recorded. No ontogenetic
differences concerning black scoters’ body sizes within each sex occurred. Such
differences were, however, revealed both in the group of males and females with
reference to EW, JIL, and CBW. A positive correlation for the relation of CBL
to SIL and a negative one for the relation of EW to both parameters of caeca and
to JIL were shown.
Key words: Black Scoter, Melanitta nigra, morphometry, oesophagus, intestine.

Ecology of the Yellow-necked mouse Sylvaemus
tauricus (= flavicollis) in Crimea. Evstaf’ev I. L. — The mouse S. tauricus
Melchior is one of the most common species in Crimean Mountains, geographically
isolated population is derivated here. The area actuates all forest-covered mountain
zone, and Yellow-necked mouse in minor quantity penetrates to border steppe regions
only on brushy valleys. Within the limits of an area S. tauricus preys in 40,1%
of registration lines (on the average — 4,64 ± 0,55 exempl./line). The relative
number of S. tauricus varies on years (from 0,3 up to 5,9 copies), and also seasons
and station’s types. The ratio of sexes is near to 1 (fraction of males — 0,51,
of females — 0,49). The pregnant females have compounded 26,2%, and number of
embryos — 1–9 (on the av-erage — 5,44 ± 0,42 embryo). The reproduction is most
active in April — July (87,8%). Number of placental blots — 2–12 pieces, on the
average — 5,95 ± 0,40. The common species of S. tauricus’s ectoparasites are:
Laelaps agilis (36,3%), Ixodes ricinus (18,7), Ctenophthalmus proximus (11,4),
Haemogamasus nidi (8,5), Androlaelaps glasgowi (4,7), Eulaelaps stabularis (4,2),
Haemogamasus hirsutosimilis (4,1), Nosopsyllus consimilis (2,9), Ctenophthalmus
wagneri (2,2), Leptopsylla taschenbergi (1,1).

S., Belov A. A., Prokhorov A. V., Vas’ko B. N. — Original data on morphology
of larvae of 76 species of tenebrionids of 43 genera and 25 tribes occurring in
Ukraine are summarized. These data are may be used for further phylogenetic reconstructions
and elaboration of classification of Tenebrionidae.

Growth and body size of the harbour porpoise,
Phocoena phocoena (Cetacea, Phocoenidae), in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
Gol’din P. E. — Postnatal growth, some aspects of life history, and body
size of harbour porpoise were studied. The mean body length of neonates is 72.5
cm; the calving season lasts at least from April to August. The maximum life span
is at least 20 years; the age at attainment of sexual maturity is 3–4 years, of
physical maturity — 6–12 years. The mean body length of adult males and females
is 132–135 cm and 143–145 cm respectively in the Sea of Azov, 122–124 cm and 132–
134 cm in the Black Sea. The question still remains of the existence of two growth
stages in postnatal ontogenesis of harbour porpoises. It seems reasonable to distinguish
two stages, each with decreasing growth rate. The first evidences are found for
the existence of separate populations in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea: adult
specimens from the Sea of Azov are larger than those from the Black Sea in 10–12
cm. During the 20th century body size of the animals has somewhat reduced. The
harbour porpoises in the studied region are at present the smallest representatives
of P. phocoena spe-cies.

dlusskyi Arnoldi, 1968, the member of the subfamily Aenictinae, is recorded for
the first time from Iran. Collected material was compared with the types of two

maeoticus and Engraulis encrasicholus ponticus. Het-man T. P. — Peculiarities
of Engraulis encrasicholus maeoticus Pusanov and Engraulis encrasicholus ponticus
Aleksandrov shape of sagittal otoliths are described. Otoliths of E. e. maeoticus
and E. e. ponticus Aleksandrov are shown to differ considerably and therefore
can be used for determination of the subspecies of Engraulis encrasicholus.

Interspecific allometry of Birds locomotor
muscles. Bogdanovich I. A. — Allometry of pelvic and pectoral limb muscles
was calculated in birds of 62 species and 11 orders. Positive allometry was defined
for absolute mass of muscles (with high correlation coefficient) and for relative
mass of pelvic limb. Negative allometry was noted for relative mass of wing muscles.
Relative mass of leg muscles and that of wing muscles are also related by negative
allometry.
Key words: birds, muscles, allometry.
