The Community of Strongylids (Nematoda, Strongylida) of Working
Donkeys (Equus asinus) in Ukraine. Kuzmina T. A., Kuzmin Yu. I. — The aim
of our work was to study the species composition of the strongylid community of
donkeys and to explore the influence of anthelmintic treatments on the community
structure. Strongylid nematodes were collected by the diagnostic deworming technique
from 33 donkeys from the riding school “Chudo-oslik” (Crimea) (25), from Kharkiv
(3) and Kyiv zoos (2) and Kyiv riding schools (3). Seventeen species were found
in donkeys studied: 16 species of Cyathostominae and 1 of Strongylinae. Between
2 and 7 species were found per donkey (average of 4.2 ± 2.8). Cyathostomum tetracanthum,
C. catinatum, Nylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicostephanus goldi and C. longibursatus)
dominated in the community; they were found in 80–100% animals studied and comprised
91.7% of the total number of strongylids collected. Two species C. tetracanthum
and Cylicocyclus auriculatus were found to be specific for donkeys. The results
obtained showed a reduction of the species richness of the strongylid community
in donkeys from riding schools and zoos caused by lack of grazing and by regular
anthelmintic treatments.
Key words: Strongylida, Cyathostominae, donkey, Equus asinus, Ukraine.

Ant Fauna (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in the Steppe Natural
Reserves of Ukraine: Zoogeographic aspects. Khomenko V. N., Radchenko A. G., Makarevich
O. N. — Data on the ant fauna of six steppe natural reserves of Ukraine are
summarised. Totally, 50 ant species of 17 genera were found on these territories.
Correlations of the species richness with zoogeographic and ecological elements
are analyzed, and differences in the myrmecofauna of the studied areas are considered.
It is suggested that the ant fauna of the Khomutovsky Step Natural Reserve is
the most typical among those of modern steppe ecosystems of Ukraine.
Key words: Hymenoptera, Formicidae, fauna, species richness, zoogeographic complexes,
ecological and faunistic analysis, steppe natural reserves, Ukraine.

Ecological Characteristic of Calanoids (Copepoda,
Nalanoida) of the Inland Waters of Ukraine. Samchyshyna L. V. — The article
presents analyze of known published data and own observations on ecology of freshwater
and brackish calanoid copepods of fauna of Ukraine. The briefly characteristic
of main types of waterbodies inhabited by calanoids is given. The relation of
species to the important ecological factors of water environment like temperature,
habitat permanence, salinity, pH, current, suspended matters, and interaction
with other hydrobionts is analyzed.
Key words: ecology, freshwater and brackish Calanoida, Ukraine.

Regularities of Xenotransplantation in the
Hybrid Complex of Water Frogs Rana esculenta (Amphibia, Ranidae). Kozinenko I.
I., Zhalai E. I., Zavodnikova N. S. — Certain issues concerning the development
of the hybrid complex of Rana esculenta were resolved by applying the immunogenetic
method of skin transplantation, which allows to identify the variability of hybrids
and parent species according to antigens of histocompatability. The exchange of
xenografts was accomplished between the frogs and their hybrids; the study involved
animals representing various hybrid systems known in Ukraine. For allodipoid hybrids
the domination of genes of the major complex of histocompatability of R. lessonae
over R. ridibunda has been established.
Key words: Rana esculenta hybrid complex, immunogenetic studies, xenotransplantation.

Species, Seasonal, Sexual Differences of the
Spleen Index of some Black Sea Fish Species and its Dependence on Anthropogenic
Impact. Kuzminova N. S. — The results of investigation of the spleen index
(SI) of some Black Sea mass fish species are presented. The species differences
were obtained: SI in gristly fish, goby, long-striped wrasse and grey mullet was
high. Season differences were determined: value of SI of the most of species was
higher in the spring and summer time, when fish are before and at spawning state.
No correlation between SI value and sex of investigated fish were obtained. SI
in the most of fish from more polluted area was lower than index of fish from
less polluted bay.
Key words: index of spleen, Black Sea fish, season, sex, pollution.

Special Features of Wolf Distribution and
Behaviour in Ukraine. Shkvyrya M. G., Kolesnikov M. O. — During for six years
the observations on wolf packs in different natural zones of Ukraine were carried
out. According to results of our investigations wolves of different local populations
are differing in such ecological and etological characteristics as square and
structure of patches of wolf packs, level of inclination for using anthropogenic
resources and some characteristics of etological structure. The size of the patch
of pack in forest and forest-steppe zones at the average is bigger then in southeastern
and western regions. The procurement of food resources influences the terms of
staying of the young wolves in the pack. The statistical data analysis showed
that the anthropogenic resources are used by the wolf evenly in all regions. Quantitative
correlation of different anthropogenic resources differentiates reliably.
Key words: wolf, patch of wolf pack, management of population.

The Morphology of Carnivorous Alveolate Flagellate
Colpodella unguis (Colpodellida, Protista). Myl’nikov A. P., Myl’nikov A. A.
— The morphology and life cycle of marine carnivorous flagellate Colpodella unguis
Patterson et Simpson, 1996, which attacks bodonids and other flagellates are considered.
The cell has a bean-like shape and two heterodynamic flagella, which arise from
two grooves. The anterior flagellum is covered by the simple mastigonemes. These
flagellates feed on the small bodonids and colourless chrysomonads sucking their
cell contents. The multiplication cysts as in other colpodells have not been found.
The cell reproduction occurs by means of division into two ones. The resting cysts
have been found in old cultures. The loss of the cells of given species at salinity
below 2–3‰ has been established in the experiments. The similarity and difference
of this predator and other colpodells are shown.
Key words: morphology, predators, colpodellids, Colpodella unguis.

Morphogenesis of Skin-Muscular Sac of Planarians
Dugesia lugubris (Dugesiidae) and Dendrocoelum lacteum (Dendrocoelidae). Chernysheva
A. O., Kanana Yu. P. — We studied the skin-muscular sac formation of the triclads
Dugesia lugubris Shmidt, 1861 and Dendrocoelum lacteum Mueller, 1774 using dated
material — from 3 min to 27 days of postembryogenesis. It is found that the sequence
of skin-muscular sac elements formation of planarians is correlated to provision
of locomotion while the size increases. The way of evolutionary improvement from
single muscle cells of the Acoela up to the level of skin-muscular sac of the
Tricladida partly reflects the formation of planarian skin-muscular sac.
Key words: postembryogenesis, turbellarians, planarians, epithelium, muscle cell,

Limnoricus ponticus sp. n.: a New Suctorian
Species (Ciliophora, Suctorea) from the Harpacticoid Copepode of Genus Tisbe.
Dovgal I. V., Lozowskiy V. L. — A new paracinetid suctorian Limnoricus ponticus
Dovgal et Lozowskiy, sp. n. is described. It differs from the related species
of the genus (L. ceter and L. seticolus) by the presence of the long plaited stalk-like
protuberance grading into the properly lorica. The semi-circumvaginative budding
is found to be characteristic for all the species of the genus. The diagnosis
of the genus Limnoricus Jankowski, 1981 is revised.
