Ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from the Rovno Amber. Dlussky G. M., Perkovsky E. E. — One hundred and eight specimens of ants from the Eocene Rovno amber are studied, with 101 specimens being identified up to the subfamily, 93 to the genus and 80 to the species level. Described as new are Dolichoderus zherichini Dlussky sp. n., Tapinoma aberrans Dlussky sp. n., T. electrinum Dlussky sp. n., Oligomyr-mex nitidus Dlussky sp. n., O. ucrainicus Dlussky sp. n. About 74% ant specimens belong to species also known in the Baltic amber. However, in terms of relative species abundance the two assemblages are essentially different. In the Rovno am-ber assemblage, about 26% of ant specimens are represented by the new genera and new species. In contrast, new collections of Baltic amber of similar size yield much less proportion (normally 2–5%) of specimens belonging to new species. Also, about 70% of Rovno ant specimens belong to recent genera, as opposed to about 52% in the Baltic amber. This indicates a geographically independent origin of Rovno and Baltic amber, but not necessary their different age.
Key words: Hymenoptera, Formicidae, ants, new species, Rovno amber.

K. — The polyploidy and other cytogenetic anomalies have been found in cells of the tissues of gills and gonads in Unionidae from different river basins of Ukraine. The possible causes of this phenomenon are discussed.

Rhynocoris persicus (Heteroptera, Reduviidae): Three Species or One? Putshkov P. V. — The study of type-specimens and other material demonstrates that Rhynoco-ris persicus (Jakovlev, 1877) = Rh. christophi (Jakovlev, 1877), syn. n. = Rh. analis (Jakovlev, 1889), syn. n. The two latter, as well as Rh. christophi f. pic-tipes (Horvath, 1911), are only melanistic forms of the former. The type of colour variability in Rh. persicus is similar to those in Rh. iracundus (Poda, 1761) and Rh. monticola (Oshanin, 1870). Key taxonomic characters and geographic range of Rhynocoris persicus (Jakovlev, 1877) as well as those of its infraspecific forms are reconsidered. The species inhabits not only the vast regions of the Fore Asia, but is present in Kazakhstan too. Besides other characters, its main differences from Rh. iracundus and other Rhynocoris species are the details of the aedeagal theca structure for male and the spindle-like incrassation of the hind tibia for female. The latter character as well as the wax-like substance covering this tibia may be associated with some unknown feature of the reproductive biology probably related to egg-deposition process.
Key words: Heteroptera, Reduviidae, Rhynocoris, variability, diagnostic, new synonyms, distribution, Palearctics.

First Description of the Sexual Forms of Seven Himalayan Myrmica Species (Hymenop-tera, Formicidae). Radchenko A. G., Elmes G. W. — First descriptions of queens of seven of Myrmica ant species and males of four of these species are given. The spe-cies were first described between 1865 and 1947 from workers. They form part of the distinctive Himalayan Myrmica fauna that inhabit the south-western slopes of the Himalaya. Drawings, measurements and indices of the specimens are provided and the key characters that distinguish them from the other related Himalayan Myrmica spe-cies are noted.
Key words: ants, Formicidae, Myrmica, Himalaya, sexual forms, first descrip-tions.

A., Klonowska-Olejnik M. — The male subimago and female imago of Electrogena braaschi (Sowa, 1984) from the cen-tral and southern parts of the Crimean Peninsula are described and illustrated. Complementary description of male imago, female subimago and egg is given. Data on the distribution and ecology of the species are provided.

Structure and Diversity of Benthic Community During Succession. Mazlumian S. À., Prosvirov Yu. V. — Successional studies were performed under experimental and natural conditions in coastal waters of Western Crimea (Black Sea). The studies involved evaluation of the temporal diversity dynamics, species richness and even-ness in experimental and bottom communities. In the period of increasing density of meroplankton, species diversity was higher in the experimental community. How-ever, at the same period, species richness was higher in the bottom community. In the period of low density of meroplankton the diversity of experimental and bottom communities were similar. The season of colonization determined the equilibrium steady-state of experimental community.
Key words: bentos, structure of communities, log-normal plotting method, diver-sity indexes.

The Peculiarities of Crossing and Reproduction of the Land Snail Xeropicta der-bentina (Pulmonata, Hygromiidae) at Northern Boundary of its Range. Kramarenko S. S. — Mate choice of the land snail is found to be is accidental in regard to the shell banding pattern, while in regard to the shell size the choice is as-sortative. The fecundity of the X. derbentina varied from 6 to 111 eggs per clutch with average value — 41.1 + 3.9, and the egg diameter — 1.45–1.78 mm (the general mean is 1.61 + 0.02); it is suggested that neither the fecundity nor the egg size depend on the shell banding pattern or the shell size.
Key words: land snail, Xeropicta derbentina, crossing, fecundity, Southern Ukraine.

The Influence of Anthropogenic Barriers on Phenotypical Structure of Populations of Cepaea hortensis (Gastropoda, Helicidae) under Urban Conditions. Sverlova N. V. — The influence of various anthropogenic barriers on frequency of banded shells in populations of C. hortensis (Muller, 1774) was studied. Mass occurrence of the species in Lviv area was connected with peculiarities of planting of trees and shrubs in the city and with transfer of mollusks by people.

Ch. — Acartia tonsa Dana is found in zooplankton samples from the Cas-pian and Azov Seas. It is supposed that earlier this species was misidentified in the Caspian Sea as Acartia clausi Giesbrecht. Examined females and males of A. tonsa from the Caspian Sea are figured and described and compared with A. clausi from the Black Sea.

Crab Pilumnus hirtellus (Decapoda, Xanthidae) Distribution in Small Phyllophora Field in the Karkinitsky Bay of the Black Sea. Terentyev A. S. — Spawning aggrega-tions of Pilumnus hirtellus (Linnaeus, 1758) was found in small Phyllophora field in the Karkinitsky Bay. It was determined that aggregations of red algae phyllo-phora serve as a spawning area for this crab species. The dependence was found be-tween their abundance and abundance of Phyllophora biomass. Minimum of algae bio-mass necessary for successful spawning is 2 g/m2. In spawning areas animals were located by groups of 3.3 ± 0.6 individuals with the correlation of males and fe-males — 1 : 1.1. One third of all females had eggs. Males constituted the most part of single animals. Average carapace width of females joining groups was 6.1 ± 2.7 more than that of single ones. We did not found this difference among males.
Key words: Pilumnus hirtellus, small Phyllophora field, spawning aggregation.

Wintering of the Black Kite (Milvus migrans) in Ukraine. Tsvelykh A. N., Panjushkin V. E. — Since 1998 wintering of the Black Kite is recorded in Ukraine in the Danube delta and the Southern Crimea. In the Crimea this species was consid-ered a rare migrant and occasionally summering species (dates of records are pre-sented). There are detailed data on appearance and changes of the largest winter-ing gathering of the species in the district of Sevastopol. Number of wintering birds increased every year and was 70 individuals of a different sex and age in 2001. The features of feeding, rest and roost behavior of the species are de-scribed, as well as interrelationships with other wintering birds, namely Raven, Hooded Crow and Woodpigeon.
